7 DIY Door Makeover Ideas for Boring Flat Doors

The fastest DIY door makeover ideas are painting in a real color, gluing on thin trim to create fake Shaker panels, adding a plank or herringbone overlay, and installing new hardware. Most of these cost under $50 a door and fit in a weekend. Plank overlays cost more and mean moving the door stop, so save them for when you have a free Saturday and some patience.

Here’s how each one works, and where each one goes wrong.

Knock on the Door First

Rap your knuckles on the middle of the door. If it sounds like a drum, it’s hollow core two thin skins over a cardboard honeycomb, with solid wood only around the outer edges.

That matters for everything below. A nail in the middle of a hollow door holds almost nothing, so glue does the real work.

Also check the age of your house. If it was built before 1978, assume the old paint could contain lead. Don’t dry-sand it until you’ve read the EPA’s lead-safe guidance for DIY painting projects.

1: Paint It a Color You Actually Picked

Paint alone changes a door more than people expect, especially if the walls stay white. Deep green, navy, clay, and charcoal all work on interior doors.

I’d skip pure black on a door at the end of a dark hallway. It reads like a hole in the wall.

A few things make the finish look pro instead of rolled-on:

  • Test the old paint. Rub a spot with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol. If color comes off, it’s latex. If not, it’s probably oil, and you need a bonding primer first.
  • Scuff with 120-grit before priming, then 220-grit between coats.
  • Take the door off its hinges and lay it flat on sawhorses. Drips mostly disappear.
  • Use satin or semi-gloss. Flat paint on a door shows every fingerprint within a week.

Latex paint stays soft longer than it feels. Give it a full day before you close the door, or it can stick to the frame and peel off in strips.

2: Fake Shaker Panels With Thin Trim

This is the most popular flat panel door makeover for a reason. It’s cheap, and from across the room it passes for a real panel door.

You’ll need 1/4-inch lattice strips or thin poplar or MDF flat stock, around 2 to 2.5 inches wide. Tape the layout onto the door with painter’s tape before you cut anything. Keep every strip at least 2 inches in from the edges so the door still closes cleanly against the stop, and leave room around the knob.

Glue each strip with construction adhesive. Then pin it with 5/8-inch pin nails in the middle of the door and longer 18-gauge brads only along the solid outer frame.

Caulk the seams, fill the nail holes, and paint the whole door one color. Two colors on trim and door usually look busy, but that depends on your room.

3 and 4: Plank and Herringbone Overlays

Plank or tongue-and-groove look

Glue a sheet of 1/4-inch plywood or thin tongue-and-groove paneling over the door face, then cut shallow grooves or use separate boards for the plank look. It gives a flat door real farmhouse character.

The catch is thickness. The door gets thicker, so it hits the stop before it closes. You’ll need to pry off the door stop trim and reset it, then re-drill the knob hole with a 2-1/8-inch hole saw through the new layer.

This only works if your stop is a separate piece of trim. Some newer frames have the stop milled into the jamb, and then you’re looking at a much bigger job.

Herringbone or chevron strips

Lay thin strips at 45 degrees, working out from a pencil centerline. It looks great stained or painted.

It also takes about three times longer than you’ll plan for. That’s a lot of angled cuts.

5: The 20-Minute DIY Door Makeover (New Hardware)

If you only have an evening, change the knob. Swapping a brass ball knob for a matte black or satin nickel lever makes a plain door look newer, even with no paint.

Before you buy, measure two things:

  • Backset: the distance from the door edge to the center of the knob hole. It’s almost always 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches.
  • Hinge size and corners: most interior hinges are 3.5 inches, with either square or rounded corners. Buy the same shape so the new hinges drop into the old cutouts.

Spray-painting your old knobs is tempting. The paint wears off where your hand grips, usually within a few months, so buy new ones if you can.

6 and 7: Closet and Pantry DIY Door Makeover ideas

Chalkboard paint on a pantry door.

Great for grocery lists. Let it cure for the time on the can, then rub the side of a piece of chalk over the whole surface and wipe it off. If you skip that step, your first list ghosts in for good.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper on a closet door

A bold print on a plain closet door changes a bedroom fast. It sticks well on smooth doors. On doors with a fake wood-grain texture, the edges start lifting within weeks, and the area around the knob is always the first to go.

Where These Projects Usually Go Wrong

  • Closing a freshly painted door the same night.
  • Painting over glossy oil paint with no primer.
  • Using MDF trim in a bathroom. The cut edges soak up moisture and swell. Seal every edge or use poplar or PVC trim there.
  • Nails too long for a hollow door. A 1-inch brad in the middle of a 1-3/8-inch door can poke right through the other side.

If this is part of a bigger room refresh, you’ll find more budget DIY projects to pair with your new doors.
