Budget Decor & Thrift
6 min readLast spring I came home with a Gather sign and a mason jar full of fairy lights. The sign annoyed me by summer. The jar is in the cupboard behind the lentils. I wasn’t trying to turn the flat into a farm. I just wanted budget farmhouse decor that didn’t look like I’d raided a […]

8 min readAsk ten companies for a quote, and you will get ten versions of the same website: first, a cedar cottage photographed at dusk, a free feasibility study button underneath it, and the word turnkey somewhere near the top. What you will not get from any of those pages is what ends up deciding how your […]

6 min readThe master bedroom in this house was the last room I touched, and for about two years it stayed more or less how the previous owners left it, which was beige walls, one bulb hanging off the middle of the ceiling, and curtains thin enough that the streetlight outside came through them like they weren’t […]

7 min readSo the 48-inch unit fit the wall. That part was fine; I measured the wall three times because I’m the sort of person who measures three times, and then the thing turned out: the bathroom door swung inward and stopped about four inches short of the drawer bank, so for two weeks I was walking […]

8 min readI have stood in more than one kitchen sold to me as modern and felt nothing. Clean lines. White everything. A tap that looked like it belonged on a boat. The owner would say “we went contemporary” and then apologise for the fruit bowl, as if a banana on the worktop had ruined the concept. […]

6 min readMy modern living room looked fine in photos and felt like a waiting room. Low sofa, white walls, the pale oak coffee table half the internet owns. I’d sit down in the evening, last about ten minutes, then get up and sit in the kitchen instead, which had worse furniture and better light. Took me […]

12 min readThe first bathroom remodel I paid for still makes me wince. Not because the tile was ugly. The tile was fine. I spent the money in the wrong order, so the room never settled. New floor, old tap. New vanity, builder-grade mirror that sat two inches too high. A glass shelf I bought because the […]

12 min readMost garage bar ideas I saved on my phone looked brilliant at midnight and slightly embarrassing by Saturday afternoon. A pallet counter. A neon beer sign. Three mismatched stools. Then November arrived, the concrete held the cold like a fridge shelf, and nobody wanted to stand out there with a drink in their hand. The […]

13 min readA kitchen put together on a small budget: new pulls on old doors, one board leaning on the backsplash, soap in a glass bottle, a plant on the sill that is not still sitting in the black plastic pot it came in. Nothing here is a renovation. It just stops looking temporary. The first time […]
